Unmetered does not mean unlimited<\/h2>\n

Unmetered means nobody counts the terabytes. It says nothing about how fast those terabytes can move, and speed is the part that actually decides whether your site works during a traffic spike.<\/p>\n

An unmetered 100Mbps port sounds generous and is a hard ceiling of roughly 32TB a month at full tilt. A metered 1Gbps port with 50TB included is a completely different product. Reading these listings correctly is the whole skill.<\/p>\n

The two numbers<\/h2>\n

Transfer<\/strong> is volume: how many terabytes per month. Usually stated as a number of TB, or as unmetered.<\/p>\n

Port speed<\/strong> is rate: how fast data can move at any instant. 100Mbps, 1Gbps, 10Gbps.<\/p>\n

They are independent, and hosts advertise whichever looks better. A listing that says unmetered without mentioning port speed is telling you half the story, and it is the less useful half.<\/p>\n

What a port speed is actually worth<\/h2>\n

The arithmetic is simple and worth doing once, because it makes the marketing transparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Nobody sustains 100 percent for a month, so the right hand column is what you should plan against.<\/p>\n

The important consequence: an unmetered 100Mbps port cannot deliver more than about 32TB no matter what the word unmetered implies. If someone offers you unlimited traffic on 100Mbps and a competitor offers 50TB on 1Gbps, the second one is both faster and, in practice, larger.<\/p>\n
