No virtualisation layer, no other customers, no shared anything. The CPU, the memory and the disks are all yours whether you use them or not.

Offshore means that machine sits in a country you chose deliberately, typically the Netherlands or Germany. The hardware is the same as anywhere; the legal environment is the reason for picking it.

You getAll the hardware, IPMI, no neighbours.

You oweEverything above the metal.

Worth it whenLoad is heavy and sustained.

On this pageAgainst a VPSWhen you actually need oneReading the specIPMI, and why it mattersWhat running one involvesFAQ

Against a VPS

A good KVM VPS already gives you root and reserved resources, so the honest gap is narrower than the price difference suggests.

What a dedicated server adds is the hardware itself. No hypervisor overhead, no steal time from a busy host, all of the disk throughput rather than a share of it, and the ability to know exactly what CPU you are on and how it is configured. For a database doing heavy sustained I/O, that is a real difference. For a WordPress site, it is not.

There is also a control dimension: you can specify RAID levels, add drives, and use hardware features that a virtual machine never sees. We compared the two properly in bare metal versus VPS.

When you actually need one

Sustained high load. Not spikes, sustained. If your VPS runs at 80 percent all day rather than during a rush, you have outgrown virtualisation.

Large databases. Once the working set does not fit in a VPS’s memory, everything hits disk and performance falls off a cliff. Dedicated memory is the fix.

Heavy disk I/O. Video, large media libraries, analytics workloads, anything writing constantly.

Hosting many sites. A reseller or agency running dozens of accounts.

Compliance or isolation requirements where sharing hardware is not acceptable at all.

Predictable costs at scale. Past a certain size, one dedicated box is cheaper than the equivalent in VPS capacity.

If none of those is true, a VPS is the better buy and the money is better spent elsewhere.

Reading the spec

Dedicated server listings are dense and a few details matter more than the headline numbers.

CPU generation, not just core count. An eight core chip from 2015 is slower per core than a four core from 2024, and per core speed is what a single web request actually uses. Look up the exact model.

ECC memory. Server grade memory that corrects single bit errors. On a machine running for years, this is the difference between a corrected error nobody notices and silent data corruption. Any real server should have it.

Disk type and RAID. NVMe against SATA SSD against spinning disk is a large difference. RAID 1 mirrors, so one disk can fail without data loss. RAID 0 stripes for speed with no redundancy at all, and losing either disk loses everything. Know which you are getting, and remember RAID is not a backup either way.

Uplink speed and traffic. A 1Gbps port with 100TB of traffic is a very different product from an unmetered 100Mbps port. Our guide to unmetered bandwidth claims covers how to read those.

Setup time. Some providers deliver in an hour, others take days because the machine is being physically built.

The headline numbers are the least useful part.

IPMI, and why it matters

IPMI is a separate small computer on the motherboard that stays powered even when the server is off. Through it you can power cycle the machine, watch it boot, mount an ISO, and reinstall the operating system, all remotely.

This is what makes a dedicated server manageable from another continent. Without it, a kernel that will not boot means a support ticket and a wait. With it, you connect to the console, see the actual error, and fix it.

Confirm IPMI or KVM-over-IP access is included before you buy. Some budget providers charge for it or only offer it on request, which is exactly when you cannot wait.

What running one involves

Everything from the operating system upward is yours, and there is no host quietly fixing things.

OS installation and updates.

The firewall, before the machine is public.

Backups, off the machine, tested. A dedicated server’s disks are a single point of failure no matter what RAID level they run.

Monitoring, from outside. Including disk health, since a failing drive gives warning if anyone is looking.

Reverse DNS, if the server sends mail.

Our dedicated server setup checklist walks through the first few hours in order.

Before you buy

CPU model looked up, not just the core count.

ECC memory confirmed.

Disk type and RAID level confirmed.

IPMI or KVM-over-IP included.

Uplink speed and traffic allowance both checked.

Datacentre location confirmed.

Setup time understood.

Backup destination arranged before go-live.

Looking at bare metal?

OffshoreKaka runs AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon dedicated servers in Amsterdam and Frankfurt, with IPMI access and NVMe storage.

See the dedicated servers

FAQ

Is a dedicated server faster than a VPS?

Under sustained load, yes, noticeably. For a normal website, often not, because the bottleneck is the application rather than the hardware. An uncached WordPress site is slow on any machine. Measure before you assume the hardware is the problem, with our TTFB guide.

Do I need to be a sysadmin?

For an unmanaged server, effectively yes. A control panel handles daily tasks, but hardware issues, kernel problems and recovery from the IPMI console all need real knowledge. Managed dedicated hosting exists and costs more for exactly that reason.

What happens if a disk fails?

With RAID 1 or 10, the server keeps running on the remaining disk and the provider swaps the failed one. With RAID 0, or a single disk, you restore from backup. This is why monitoring disk health matters, and why a backup off the machine is not optional.

Is it worth it just for privacy?

Rarely on its own. A KVM VPS in the same datacentre sits under the same jurisdiction and the same abuse policy, at a fraction of the cost. Buy dedicated hardware for performance and isolation, and treat the legal environment as something you get either way.

Dedicated servers provide full hardware resources for websites and applications that need performance, storage or isolation.

[2

post-86","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-offshore-hosting-guides
["GET
