Selling hosting without owning servers<\/h2>\n

Reseller hosting gives you a WHM account on someone else’s infrastructure, from which you create and manage individual cPanel accounts for clients. They see your brand, your nameservers and your control panel. They never see the company behind it.<\/p>\n

The offshore part means those servers sit under Dutch or German law, which matters if your clients host user content or care where their data lives.<\/p>\n

How it works<\/h2>\n

You buy a reseller plan with a quota of disk and bandwidth. Inside WHM you create packages, then create accounts against them. Each client gets a normal cPanel login and has no visibility of the other accounts or of WHM itself.<\/p>\n

The provider keeps the servers running, patches the operating system, handles hardware failure and network issues. You handle everything your client sees: setting up accounts, answering questions, and billing.<\/p>\n

What white label really covers<\/h2>\n

Worth being precise here, because the term is used loosely.<\/p>\n

What you can brand:<\/strong> the cPanel theme and logo, private nameservers on your own domain, all client-facing email, and the billing portal. From the client’s point of view, it is your hosting company.<\/p>\n

What can still give it away:<\/strong> a reverse DNS lookup on the server IP, the IP range’s registered owner, the SSL certificate on shared services, and support replies that accidentally carry the upstream provider’s signature. None of this matters to most clients and all of it is discoverable by a curious one.<\/p>\n

The private nameservers are the part that matters most, because ns1.yourbrand.com<\/code> is what clients type into their registrar and what they see every time they think about their hosting.<\/p>\n

Setting it up<\/h2>\n

  1. Register your brand domain<\/strong> and set up private nameservers. Your provider gives you the IPs; you create A records for ns1<\/code> and ns2<\/code> and register them as glue records at your registrar. This step trips people up because glue records are set at the registrar, not in DNS.<\/li>\n
  2. Create packages in WHM<\/strong> before you create any accounts. Disk, bandwidth, database and email limits per tier. Changing packages later is easy; changing accounts one at a time is not.<\/li>\n
  3. Brand cPanel.<\/strong> Logo, colours, and remove the upstream links.<\/li>\n
  4. Set up billing.<\/strong> WHMCS is the standard and integrates with WHM so account creation is automatic on payment. Manual billing works at first and stops working around ten clients.<\/li>\n
  5. Write your terms and acceptable use policy.<\/strong> Yours must be at least as strict as your provider’s, because you are responsible upstream for what your clients do.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Pricing it<\/h2>\n

    Do the arithmetic before you sell anything. A reseller plan with 100GB of disk, sold as 10GB accounts, is ten clients at full allocation. In practice clients use a fraction of their quota, so overselling is normal in this industry, but plan for what happens if usage rises.<\/p>\n

    Price on support, not on disk. Disk is cheap and the market price for it is set by companies far larger than you. What a small host sells is a person who answers, and that is worth paying for. Competing on price against a company with a thousand servers is not a winnable game.<\/p>\n

    Keep some headroom. A reseller plan running at 95 percent of quota leaves you nowhere to go when a client needs more space.<\/p>\n

    The part nobody mentions<\/h2>\n

    The technology is the easy half. The business is support.<\/p>\n

    Clients email at inconvenient hours. Many questions are not hosting questions at all: WordPress problems, domain problems, email client problems. If you do not answer, they leave, and if you answer everything instantly you have no evenings.<\/p>\n

    Decide up front what is included and what is not, write it down, and put it on the site. “We support the hosting platform. We do not build or fix your website” is a perfectly reasonable position, and stating it early prevents most of the friction.<\/p>\n
